Fosse Children’s Services Collaborates with Professor Stephen Heppell to Transform Living Spaces for Enhanced Wellbeing and Belonging.

We are excited to be working in collaboration with Professor Stephen Heppell, a world-leading expert in learning environments, to explore how we can optimise the living and learning spaces across our children’s homes. This innovative work will look at how small environmental changes can have a significant impact on wellbeing, engagement, and development.

"I have been honoured and excited to be working with the Fosse team - renewing some very long standing associations. Their work is exemplary; their hearts and thoughts parallel mine. Creating world class places together, where children can be their very best selves through harnessing so much science, experience and knowledge is exhilarating and hugely satisfying” -  Professor Stephen Heppell

Professor Heppell’s research will guide us in areas such as maximising natural light, improving air quality (for example, through the use of clear windows and appropriate indoor plants), and enhancing movement opportunities throughout the day. We recognise that even regular hand movements, flexible furniture choices like standing desks or rocking chairs, and planned physical activity can positively influence emotional regulation and learning outcomes.

A key focus of this work is fostering a true sense of agency, belonging, and membership. We believe that every young person should feel they are a valued part of the home and that this must be intentionally nurtured - through language, daily interactions, and even the objects and layout of the space itself.

This collaborative project marks an exciting step forward in reimagining our children’s homes as nurturing, responsive environments, where thoughtful design, informed by leading research, empowers young people to thrive, feel deeply valued, and truly belong.
