Today marks an important milestone for one of the young people in our care - a young adult who finds it extremely challenging to engage in community activities or step outside his familiar routine. An overdue optician appointment meant we needed thoughtful planning, patience, and a highly supportive approach, especially given his limited verbal communication and reluctance to travel anywhere unfamiliar.
Recognising the importance of meeting his health needs, our team carried out extensive research before discovering SeeAbility, an organisation specialising in accessible eye care for people with varied abilities. After a helpful discussion with an optician, we scheduled the appointment and began preparing our young adult with clear explanations and familiar communication tools to help reduce anxiety.
On the day, the optician visited the home early to understand the environment and decide where the test would work best. The two professionals from Blow Opticians were outstanding - skilled communicators who adapted their approach to meet his individual needs. Together we used picture-based communication tools he recognises, helping him stay comfortable and engaged. With patience, reassurance, and excellent collaboration with our staff, the assessment was completed calmly and without pressure.
The examination confirmed that he does experience some difficulties with his vision, allowing us to move forward with the right support to improve his comfort and daily experiences.
This achievement reflects not only the dedication and teamwork of our residential staff, but also the remarkable progress shown by this young person. Despite the challenges he faces, he demonstrated courage and resilience by taking part in an unfamiliar situation - an experience that will have a positive and lasting impact on his confidence going forward.
